Research

My current research area is gender identity in human voice. The project aims to explore anatomical and behavioural differences used in children and adults for vocal gender-signalling, and investigate to what extent these are consciously exercised.

The study will also investigate the role of voice in sexual orientation and how acoustic and perceptual characteristics may interrelate with anatomical, hormonal and sociological factors.

Research on gender identity and sexual orientation cues in human voice could add to the understanding of the relationship between biological and cultural differences on sex and gender. It could shed light on childhood and adulthood gendered behaviour and demystify common stereotypes such as that all “gay sounding” individuals are gay. Finally it could inform research in the areas of natural synthetic speech and language development.

Other interests:

  • emotion in the human voice
  • gender development
  • visual and auditory cognitive processing
